What Yarns Should I Bring To A Learn To Weave Workshop?

One of the most common questions I get from people coming to my Learn To Weave workshop is “What yarn should I bring?”

The short answer is: “Bring the yarns you like!”

This workshop is all about experimenting, playing with texture, and having fun with colour. There isn’t a strict materials list or a step-by-step pattern we follow, so there isn’t a specific yarn that you have to bring.

A Good Starting Point

If you’re not sure where to start, try bringing:

  • a few different colours that you like

  • a mix of textures

  • some thicker, some thinner

Having a small variety gives you more options when you start weaving and helps create an interesting cloth.

But don’t worry - you don’t need a huge collection.

Use What You Already Have

Before buying anything new, have a look around at home. Do you have any leftover yarns from old projects, anything “linear” - flexible ribbons and lace, thin strips of fabric?

You could also:

  • ask a crafty friend or family member if they have spare yarn

  • look at the craft section of your local op shop

  • check out your local Facebook Marketplace

Weaving is a wonderful way to use up bits and pieces that might otherwise sit unused.

Yarns Available At The Workshop

I will also have some yarn options available on the day:

Texture Yarn Packs — $20
A mix of interesting and textured yarns to add pops of texture and colour to your weaving.

Basic Yarn Packs — $20
Smooth yarns in a range of colours.

These packs are designed to supplement what you bring rather than complete a project on their own.

I’ll also have a basket of odds and ends of yarn/fibres available that everyone can dip into to add extra details to their weaving.

A Creative, Playful Workshop

This workshop isn’t about following strict instructions or creating identical pieces. It’s about learning the basics of weaving and then exploring your own creativity.

Some people arrive with a big bag of yarn, others bring just a few balls. Both approaches work perfectly.

The most important thing is that you bring colours and textures that make you happy.
