The Birth Of Yarn About Yarn
Yarn About Yarn came into being nearly 20 years ago when Blogger & Blogspot were popular platforms. I was knitting and dabbling in mixed media fibre arts, quilting, weaving and a few other things as well. I decided to start a blog and Yarn About Yarn was born.
Then came the onset of Ravelry with it’s forums and project pages and my blogging went by the wayside. To this day my profile on Ravelry is still Yarn About Yarn and I try to keep my project pages up to date.
Yarn About Yarn is also the name of my Etsy store where I sold my makes - knitting, crochet, felting, weaving, hand-dyed yarns. However, like many others, I became disheartened with the changes to Etsy and I no longer sell on that platform.
During this time I had my first website with an online store. I was importing and selling high end yarns that weren’t available here in Australia, mostly from the US & Canada, but also silk from India. I started doing a local market so that crafters could see, and more importantly, feel these luxurious yarns in person. I loved doing the markets and meeting other makers just like me. I still love markets and usually do a handful every year, and I look forward to talking to people about my weaving process. After a couple of years, importing high end (aka expensive) yarns wasn’t viable anymore when our Aussie dollar was performing so poorly and I was paying in US dollars. Sadly I had to close my little online store.
Fast forward to today and where is Yarn About Yarn now?
I still knit every day. I also do a lot of weaving & have collected an assortment of looms (too many some may say). Weaving means so much to me & is such a big part of my life that it has also become my business and so Yarn About Yarn continues. Hence this website and I’m also selling my weaving on MadeIt which is a fantastic platform for Australian Handmade.
As for the future of Yarn About Yarn - I have some plans, but who knows what the future will bring and as you can see Yarn About Yarn has had quite a few changes along the way. Throughout the years though I’ve never strayed from my love of the fibre arts, so if any of this resonates with you I hope you’ll stick around and see what the future brings.
