I recently heard about a community knitting project being organized in New Zealand for the International Year of Chemistry (which happens to be this year apparently).
The project involves knitters each knitting a part of the periodic table. Now, working & studying in the field of Chemistry and being a knitter I just had to participate.
Unfortunately I didn't hear about it soon enough & I've missed out on contributing an element but I am knitting a plain square. The finished periodic table will be displayed at the 2011 New Zealand Institute of Chemistry Conference to be held later this year at the Victoria University in Wellington.
If you want to become involved by knitting a square or just want to see what other events are planned, then visit the website: http://yearofchemistry.org.nz/
My square will be knit in Biggan Design DK, colour 330 ( which is Safron) ...... keep an eye out for it!

How cool is that! I'll be looking for your square. That's just amazing.
I never cease to be amazed at the things people find to do with knitting. The periodic table is certainly a 'way out there' kind of project. Hope you enjoy your saffron square.
